CNC Turner (Programmer/Setter/Operator)


Job Purpose:

To produce high-quality precision components using CNC lathes by interpreting engineering drawings, programming, setting, and operating CNC turning machines to meet production requirements and customer specifications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Program, set, and operate CNC turning machines (preferably using Fanuc/Doosan Controls).

  • Read and interpret technical engineering drawings and work to tight tolerances.

  • Ensure quality standards are met through in-process checks and final inspection.

  • Select and set up tooling and workholding devices.

  • Carry out first-off and in-process inspections using measuring equipment (micrometers, verniers, gauges, etc.).

  • Adjust machine settings and programs to optimise performance and reduce cycle times.

  • Identify and report non-conformities or machine/tooling issues.

  • Maintain a safe and tidy working environment in line with health and safety guidelines.

  • Record production data and complete relevant documentation accurately.

  • Assist with training apprentices or less experienced team members, if required.

Key Skills and Experience Required:

  • Proven experience as a CNC Turner (programmer/setter/operator) in a precision engineering environment.

  • Strong understanding of CNC turning techniques and machining processes.

  • Ability to program from scratch using Featurecam/Fusion 360 and/or Conversational.

  • Proficiency in reading and understanding engineering drawings and technical specifications.

  • Familiarity with geometric tolerancing and surface finish requirements.

  • Competent in the use of manual measuring instruments.

  • Excellent attention to detail and a proactive approach to quality control.

  • Good communication and teamwork skills.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Recognised engineering apprenticeship or Level 3 NVQ / City & Guilds in Mechanical Engineering or similar, or relevant proven experience in the industry.

  • Experience with continuous improvement and lean manufacturing principles.
